Finally finished the website for my dad, can be found at ArthurGills.com hopefully it'll get lots of visits and hopefully even sell some print!

I'm happy with the way it turned out. its not much on the design side but was more of a play around with php which worked well for the gallery.

Its only a small one, well or so I thought, I friend of my dads wanted a small e-commerce site to sell a product. (I really cant remember what it was I'll get back to th conent whe nthe time comes) My first thoughts were ok, this could be very difficult as I have no idea of how to make an e-commerce site especially with all the security that has to be involved from cash transactions, but not having the slightest idea of how to do something has not stopped me so far and I went searching for a simple solution. I had a search and now have a good idea of how this can be achieved with out to much of a problem using Paypal's system. The only problem it seems with this now is that the only way to input new items is by adding HTML code which would be to difficult as it would require a knowledge of HTML and how to use an FTP program, so I am trying to develop, using the Blog system I already have, a small content management system which will allow the input of the details and images using a simple form. And then for it to put everything back on a page with the HTML required by for the Paypal commerce system. Simple to use at least. Getting it to work is another story....

Christ.

on the bright side if I get this to work I will have a good template for a basic content management system/E-commerce site hybrid type thingy. Hell I know what I mean.

So yeah I got around to actually doing something. I have updated the 3d Gallery piece so that you can now actually view the SWF. It was a long process to make the thing more compatible online, but it seems to work much better then before, where the movement wouldnt load properly until about half way through and you'd just be looking at a white screen until then. At least now each route has a small preloader so it waits until the route is loaded (each route is a seperate swf and are quite large at around 300-400k but its only for display purposes anyway and would be a broadband version not ment for dialup users if it were ever a proper site)

Sooo I think I'll have another shot at getting an archive system for the blog..

Another job done the website is finished and is my best web piece so far in itself . I'm happy with the look of the site (finally after 3-4 attempts I liked, before realising they were a bit shit) and have made it easy enough to update. The Next step would be to add some tutorials (for which I have some ideas I didnt just put it there to make me look smert) and add some more peices to my portfolio.

As far as work goes we have one more brief for this course, the final major project which if as open ended as I hope will be good fun and I intend to make some sort of flash game to expand my actionscript knowledge. The company is looking for work and we did have a job but then apparently the client has not got back to use with any more information on the job so we are still somewhat unsure as to where we stand with that job. And for myself the next think lined up would be a site for my dads paintings which I would like to make into a small e-commerce site to allow us to sell prints of his work but how I'm going to achive that I dont know..but I'm sure I can work something out.

About me

Hi I'm Edwin Gills a 22 year old web designer from the North East of England and as you may have guessed, this is my website (Woo!) . I have several years experience now in the field of web design, with a National Diploma and an almost completed Foundation Degree under my belt, but as should be expected I am still learning new things with every project I complete but I guess that's one of the great things about Multimedia, nobody knows everything about it as it is to vast and so your always learning.

At the minute I am working for a business called Blue42 which I have helped to create, and this site is generally for my own persoanl use, to write blogs and put up pieces of work as my online portfolio but I would be quite willing to do freelance work in the areas of web or logo design. More information on contacting me can be found here.

Outside of work I am an avid gamer, mostly playing online games such as CSS and BF2. I mainly play FPS's and Startergy games. (C & C Red Alert and Goldeneye being 2 games which really got me into gaming) as well as games I love TV programs such as The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and well most Animated comedies. I also have an interest in psychology and Philosophy and am (*still*) reading Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance which I would also recommend to anyone else interested in these subjects.

stop using Internet Explorer and get a decent browser, such as FireFox.
